Although words, tone of voice, and gestures are also important, the most reliable way to learn the feelings of others is through observing facial expressions. Many children, including those on the autism spectrum, have trouble "reading" feelings from observing facial expressions. The About Faces Workbook contains 52 images of faces followed by a quotation representing the feeling expressed and open-ended questions to help children link expressions and feelings.
